Abstract

Objective: To analyze, through a narrative review, the clinical management of Acute Otitis Media (AOM) in children. Bibliographic review: Childhood is characterized by Otitis Media (OM), which is defined by a middle ear infection that mainly affects the preschool phase. This pathology is subcategorized into: AOM, recurrent acute otitis media, otitis media with effusion and chronic otitis media (COM). The symptomatology of AOM is marked by fever, irritability, otorrhea, anorexia and vomiting. Anatomically, the child's Eustachian tube is more horizontal than in adults, which corroborates the development of AOM. The disease is usually preceded by a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract and causes swelling of the Eustachian tube. The most common complication of AOM is acute mastoiditis, which favors the accumulation of purulent secretion and bacterial colonization, which improves with antibiotics. Final considerations: Otitis media is a disease that affects children aged 2-6 years along with characteristic symptoms. The diagnosis is similar between OME and COM, which makes an outcome difficult. The resolution can be spontaneous, mostly with symptomatic use. The antibiotic is reserved for the prevention of possible complications.
