Abstract

Objective: To address aspects related to primary aldosteronism (HAP) screening and discuss the necessity to cover all newly diagnosed hypertensive patients. Bibliographic Review: The HAP have a high prevalence and two main subtypes. It’s relation to bad cardiovascular outcomes is proven and much higher when compared to primary hypertension. The screening is an important strategy, since that the direct treatment can improve blood pressure, reduce cardiovascular risk, sometimes even achieve cure in surgical treatment, and improve biochemical profile. Thus, considering the factors mentioned and the cost-effectiveness involved, it is important that screening the entire population of hypertensive patients be considered in clinical practice. Final Considerations: Although the indications of screening for HAP have predetermined groups of patients, given their elevated risk, this work shows that the screening can be extended to all newly diagnosed hypertension, given the cost-effectiveness, high morbidity and mortality related and high prevalence of HAP among hypertensive patients.
