Abstract
Objective: To review in the scientific literature the mechanism of action of ozone therapy in pain management and situations in which its use is beneficial. Bibliographic review: Ozone in medicinal form is a mixture between 95-99% oxygen gas and 1-5% ozone. This therapy is used in numerous conditions marked by chronic inflammatory processes and immune hyperactivation. The therapy works by producing an oxidative process moderated by interactions between biological components and O3, resulting in products such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a fundamental reactive oxygen species (ROS). The contraindications of the methods and their side effects need to be known, but they should be further tested in vivo. Studies show the beneficial use of ozone therapy in: fibromyalgia, herniated discs, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, pain due to cancer treatment, post-herpetic neuralgia, plantar fasciitis and wound healing. Final considerations: Ozone therapy provides patients with a low-cost, very effective treatment option that brings less aggression to the body, leaving no chemical residues. It is a therapy whose study and knowledge by professionals is extremely important, as it is an option that restores much of the lost quality of life to patients who live with pain.
