Abstract
Objective: To discuss fetal surgery to correct myelomeningocele. Bibliographic Review: Myelomeningocele (MMC) is a congenital spinal deformity that occurs within the neural tube and prevents it from closing in the fourth week of pregnancy, a period in which the baby's spine bones do not develop properly during pregnancy, a pouch may appear on the back containing the spinal cord, nerves and cerebrospinal fluid. Depending on the degree of damage, it can cause different neurological dysfunction. It is a surgery whose procedure is beneficial for neurodevelopment, and currently there are two techniques for performing prenatal surgery: open surgery, which uses a maternal laparotomy in its procedure, and a procedure that uses triple percutaneous access via fetoscopy. Final considerations: Due to the high incidence of MMC and the severe chronic disability that it provides in the patient's life, it is very important to perform surgery to correct this abnormality.
