Abstract

Objective: To analyze the association between the degree of frailty and the risk of falls in hospitalized elderly. Methods: A cross-sectional, quantitative study carried out with 142 elderly people from a university hospital located in the Northeast of Brazil. The assessments involved the application of the Mini Mental State Examination, Morse Fall Scale and Edmonton Frail Scale. For the statistical analyses, the Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were used, at a confidence level of 95%. Results: Most of the elderly were female (52.8%), aged between 60 and 69 years (59.2%), married or in a stable relationship (69.0%), illiterate (38.7%). A statistically significant association was identified between frailty in the elderly with a higher risk of falls, as well as the opposite, confirmed by the p-value of 0.001. Conclusion: The findings suggest that frailty influences the occurrence and number of falls and that the occurrence of falls also contributes to the development of frailty in the elderly. Healthcare providers in the hospital setting should be aware of this association and prioritize actions accordingly, considering the serious consequences of a fall.
