Abstract

Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Bibliographic review: ADHD is characterized by persistent and disabling symptoms of age-inappropriate inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity. It is one of the most common neurobehavioral disorders of childhood and can profoundly affect children's academic performance, well-being and social interactions. In addition to the core symptoms, emotional dysregulation (such as low frustration tolerance, irritability, ease of negative emotional experience, and emotional lability) independently contribute to functional impairments. Final considerations: ADHD is the most frequent neurobehavioral pathology in children and adolescents and has a high prevalence, as it affects about 5% of school-age children, while in adults the prevalence reaches 7.3% globally. It is characterized by early onset, a combination of hyperactive and poorly modulated behavior with marked inattention and persistent lack of task involvement, and scope over situations and persistence over time of these behavioral characteristics. The stimulant drugs Amphetamine (AMP) and Methylphenidate (MPH) are the first-line pharmacological treatment for ADHD and their effectiveness has been amply demonstrated.
