Abstract

Objective: To report the successful experience of a campaign to encourage blood donation in the COVID-19 pandemic. Experience report:  Descriptive study, experience report type, carried out in a large university hospital complex, with exclusive care for the Unified Health System, in Salvador, Bahia, between July and August 2020. To raise awareness and to recruit blood donors, an exhibition of photos called “Portraits of Hope” was used. Motivational phrases such as: “we need someone of your blood type”, “Leave home to do good” were also exposed, bringing more meaning to the action. In July, there was an increase of 252% in the collection of blood and blood components for the Hospital. Final considerations: In the context of the new coronavirus pandemic, approaches on the subject of blood donation became emerging, moving the university hospital to use effective strategies to ensure the availability of blood and blood products.
