Abstract

Objective: To identify the scientific productions developed on the pathophysiology of COVID-19 in childhood. Bibliographic review: The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 among children is small when compared to other age groups. Most cases among children remain asymptomatic. Children with COVID-19 have milder symptoms and fewer hospitalizations and life-threatening complications. Severe cases of the disease such as Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome have been described in children. Understanding the viral invasion through its Spike protein to the ACE 2 epithelial cells and through the transmembrane serine protease 2 may explain the decrease in pediatric cases. This group has these proteins, also to understand the functioning of pediatric signs and symptoms. As for transmission, it was believed that children, due to their milder symptoms, contributed little to its proliferation, but there is currently evidence that they can spread the infection. Final considerations: Children are likely to have differences in their immune responses to the virus. By covering this population in new scientific research, it may be possible to increase the preparedness to face new mutations emerging from both SARS-CoV-2 and other viral pathologies, transcending new endemics and pandemics, preparing and protecting the future of this population.
