Abstract

Objective: to investigate the contributions of the father's participation in prenatal care/delivery and the factors that may interfere in this process. Methods: Descriptive-exploratory study with a qualitative approach and cross-sectional carried out between August and September 2017, in the obstetric sector of a public hospital in the city of Parnaíba-PI. The sample consisted of 15 interviewed parents. Data were analyzed according to Bardin's content analysis, resulting in three thematic categories. Results: it was possible to perceive that the parents share the pregnancy, providing emotional and affective support, being with their partners, especially in prenatal consultations. Participation in consultations was recognized as important by those surveyed, as, according to them, it is an opportunity to obtain information about the health of their partner and their child. Childbirth was referred to by the participants as a difficult time for the mother, and the presence of the man/father was essential to support her, although not all of them participated in this moment. Conclusion: The results point to a tendency for a man/father to be more present/participating in the pregnancy and childbirth of his partners, and the positive contributions of this to the couple's relationship and the expectation of the child.
