Abstract

Objective: To analyze the relationship between the symptoms of borderline personality disorder and self-extermination and self-injury from a theoretical-practical perspective. Experience report: Borderline patients present a deficit in the constitution of their subjectivity resulting from failures in their primary relationships that affect the structuring of their personality through aspects such as the self-other indifferentiation; the fear of being invaded and the fear of being abandoned by another person (annihilation anxiety); the exacerbated excitability and the discharge of this excitatory energy in the physical body itself. Based on these aspects of the personality, the mode of psychic functioning of borderline cases is constituted, based on instability and impulsiveness in different areas of their lives; in damage to their relationships with the internal self and with the external environment and in chronic feelings of emptiness, which are factors associated with the high rate of suicidal and self-injurious behaviors in such patients. Final considerations: It is understood that the specific symptomatology of borderline cases is characterized by affective instability, in self-image and in interpersonal relationships; by impulsivity and aggressiveness are important predictors for the increase in self-destructive behaviors that are frequent in this type of disorder.
