Abstract
Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Chronic Pancreatitis (CP). Bibliographic review: Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a disease characterized by a syndrome of symptoms and clinical manifestations related to functional abnormalities that develops as a result of fibrosis and glandular atrophy related to acute and chronic inflammation. Exocrine and endocrine functions are lost, often leading to chronic pain which is the main symptom. Its prevalence is generally estimated at 30-50 per 100,000 individuals globally. The etiology is multifactorial, although CP most commonly occurs due to environmental insults, with an increased risk in patients with a genetic or anatomic predisposition. Final considerations: Chronic pancreatitis is a progressive fibro-inflammatory process in the pancreas that causes permanent structural damage and leads to a deterioration of exocrine and endocrine function. Pain is the most important clinical problem in chronic pancreatitis, occurring in 80% to 90% of patients, and is often disabling. Its management is performed with non-opioid and opioid analgesics, and endoscopic and surgical treatment is reserved for patients whose pharmacological therapy has failed.
