Abstract
Objective: To analyze the relationship between mercury levels in maternal hair and weekly fish consumption. Methods: Observational, cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study, involving parturients attended at the time of childbirth at a public maternity hospital that is a reference for the Xingu region, from March to December 2020. Collection of sociodemographic and weekly frequency of fish consumption in the diet were obtained using standard protocol. HgTotal concentrations were measured in hair by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Results: Of the total number of study participants (105 mother and child pairs) none had mercury levels above 1 µg/g. The average concentration of HgTotal in hair was 0.314 µg/g. Among the mothers' demographic characteristics, 77.14% were over 20 years old, 82.00% of them were brown and most of the interviewees had no income (34%). Among those who consumed fish, most had low consumption of fish, and the percentage of mercury was 0.608 μg/g. Conclusion: Prenatal exposure to mercury associated with the consumption of fish in the diet in the Xingu region is lower than that observed in other studies carried out in the Amazon, however, evidence of fish contamination in the region suggests that these women need to be monitored periodically.
