Abstract

Objective: To report the experiences of an extension project, linked to the Pro-Rectory of Extension (PROEX) of a federal university, focused on oral health education in a Center for The Care of the Deaf (CAS) in the Northern Region of Brazil. Experience Report: The target audience of the activities were deaf students, parents/guardians, employees and teachers who attended the CAS, in Belém-PA, from 2017 to 2019. To achieve the inclusion process, the center made available teachers of the institution for interpretation of the contents in Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS). The target audience presented an understanding of the topics discussed. However, it was noticed that the deaf community was unaware of some topics discussed, such as the use of the correct floss and brush. Reports of difficulties in seeking dental services due to barriers to communication with dentists were mentioned by the deaf. Final considerations: We have ratified the importance of activities with educational and preventive purposes, through adapted and inclusive techniques, which can stimulate the self-care of the person with deafness to their general and oral health.
