Abstract

Objective: To analyze how the indiscriminate use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can affect the cardiovascular system. Bibliographic review: NSAIDs are very useful drugs in clinical practice. They inhibit cyclooxygenases (COX), therefore interfering with the inflammatory response. Among the class, there are those responsible for blocking COX-2 (for example, diclofenac), which inhibit the action of prostaglandins I2 (PGI2) and allow the production of thromboxane A2 (TXA2), ultimately favoring thrombotic events. Therefore, it is suggested that COX-2 inhibition increases the susceptibility to form atheromas, which may lead to ischemic processes, increasing the risk of myocardial infarction. Final considerations: Without the need for a medical prescription and due to the low purchase price, NSAIDs are marketed indiscriminately by those who do not understand their risks, especially on the cardiovascular system. The immoderate use of this class of drugs, as a result of self-medication, is associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis, heart failure and increased blood pressure.
