Abstract

Objective: To demonstrate through the literature the effectiveness of upper digestive endoscopy (EDA) in the preoperative period of bariatric surgery. Bibliographic review: In obese individuals, who have already undergone several pharmacological and behavioral treatment options, bariatric surgery appears as a unique procedure to mitigate obesity and several related comorbidities. As a preoperative procedure, many surgeons use EDA for diagnosis and treatment of possible pathologies that influence the surgery to be performed. Final considerations: Although EDA is an intervention used for the diagnosis of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, it ends up contributing to the prevention of complications that may affect the postoperative period and even the operative itself. In this way, the use of this intervention in the preoperative period becomes viable due to the relevance that this procedure causes to the health and well-being of the patient. In view of this, it is noted that UDE is necessary to avoid possible complications that may affect the postoperative period of bariatric surgery, making the procedure safer and avoiding morbidity and mortality.
