Abstract
Objective: To demonstrate the prevalence and sensitivity profile of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from employees of a public health unit in the state of Bahia. Methods: This is an observational study, carried out with 445 workers, between January 2018 and April 2020. The prevalence of S. aureus was determined by collecting a nasal swab, cultured on mannitol agar and identified by the Gram method and tests biochemicals. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined by disk diffusion test and confirmation of MRSA on selective media. Results: Of the 176 colonized professionals, 76.5% are female. About 98.8% of the strains were sensitive to vancomycin and 100% were resistant to penicillin G. MRSA colonization was 32.3%, with 80.7% of professionals working in more than one health unit and 75.4 % report that they do not use PPE frequently. Conclusion: It is evident, therefore, not only the presence of S. aureus as a constituent agent of the microbiota, but also as a potential microorganism for the development of nosocomial infections, considering the variability in the antimicrobial resistance profile, including the presence of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strains, which further increases its pathogenic potential.
