Abstract
Objective: To analyze the relevance of the application of the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) in the elderly in Brazil. Methods: This is a integrative review, approached according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology. The search was carried out in two databases: MEDLINE, LILACS, through the da BVS. The descriptors used for the selection of the articles were: “elderly”, “cognitive performance”, and “function capacity”, combined with the Boolean operator “AND” between them, in Portuguese and English, under the period of 2016 and 2021. Results: Among the interventions listed, the MMSE presented satisfactory results, accompanied by the regular practice of physical activities and events that allow the elderly to have greater knowledge about this topic and the possibility of improving their cognitive activities. Final considerations: It is concluded that, in view of the analyzed studies, the MMSE becomes a relevant, objective, easy-to-apply evaluation test, constantly used by physicians and that may be used by other health professionals. However, as it is a simplified test, its results can guide more specialized procedures.
