Abstract
Objective: To analyze the main complications related to urinary tract infection during the gestational period. Methods: This is an integrative literature review, of a qualitative nature and exploratory level. The following Boolean descriptors and operators were used: Urinary tract infections AND Pregnancy, in the electronic databases PubMed, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde and Scielo. Results: It has been shown that Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), especially in patients with difficult therapeutic installation due to antibiotic resistance, can predispose to several maternal-fetal complications, such as premature birth, low birth weight, impaired motor development and microcephaly. Final considerations: The gestational period is a time of many physiological and anatomical changes in the female organism, with changes especially in the urogenital tract, which can predispose the entire urinary tract to infection processes, especially by uropathogenic Escherichia coli, due to the process of ureteral dilation and progesterone action on smooth muscle, and its precaution and immediate intervention with effective treatment, can help to mitigate the possible complications arising from prolonged and untreated UTI.
