Abstract
Objective: To analyze the patient safety culture from the perspective of the nursing team of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a teaching hospital. Methods: Cross-sectional observational study carried out with 16 nursing professionals from an ICU. Data were collected from September to November 2020, using the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture questionnaire. For data analysis, guidelines from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality were followed, which considers the percentage of responses for each dimension of patient safety culture. Results: The dimensions of safety culture with the most positive results and with potential for improvement were “Teamwork within the unit” (76.8%), “Organizational learning/continuous improvement” (64.8%) and “Frequency of reported events” (60.5%). Regarding the number of event notifications, most professionals did not make any notification in the last 12 months, which represents 93.75%. Conclusion: The results can help managers to identify gaps in patient safety, subsidizing effective strategies to increase the quality and safety of care. This investigation points to the need to develop permanent education in order to strengthen the patient safety culture, providing real changes in the sector.
