Abstract
Objective: To analyze the indications, efficacy and side effects of the use of oral Minoxidil. Methods: This is an Integrative Literature Review type research, based on data from the U.S. National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Portal Capes and Cochrane Library. From the active search with the Descriptors in Health Sciences (DeCS): “Therapeutics”, “Minoxidil” and “Oral Administration” articulated by the Boolean operator “AND”, 15 articles were used for the study. Results: Oral Minoxidil proved to be a great alternative for people who are intolerant to topical use or who do not like the sensation of this substance. The main uses that have been shown to be effective include the different types of alopecia: androgenetic, areata, traction, frontal fibrosing and lichen planopilaris, in addition to Moniletrix, telogen effluvium and loose anagen hair syndrome in female cases. In men, for androgenic alopecia, areata, cicatricial and telogen effluvium and loose anagen hair syndrome were highlighted. It was also observed that among the side effects caused by this medication, hypertrichosis, which is an increase in hair growth, can be highlighted. Final considerations: Low doses can be considered a safe therapeutic modality for healthy individuals, presenting as adverse reactions: dermatitis, pruritus, scalp desquamation, sodium and water retention and weight gain, but it rarely causes serious side effects.
