Abstract

Objective: To analyze the prevalence and identify the profile of patients affected by appendix diseases in Brazil. Methods: Observational, cross-sectional and descriptive study using epidemiological data obtained from the Departamento de Informática do Sistema Único de Saúde (DATASUS), in the subsections of Sistema de Informações sobre Mortalidade (SIM) and Sistema de informações hospitalares (SIH). Results: There were 1,014,125,638.80 cases of appendix disease reported in Brazil from January 2008 to June 2022. Prevalence was higher in males (59.3%), age between 20-29 years (20.76%), and white race (25.40%). A total of 1,599,268 cases of hospitalizations were identified, in which the largest number of hospitalizations were in the Southeast region (39.46%), whites (34.8%) and a male-female ratio of approximately 1.51:1. In the SIM, the highest number of deaths was recorded in 2020 (8.77%), especially in the Southeast region (42.85%), white (46.08%) and age group 70-79 years (17.35%) and male sex (56.24%). Conclusion: The profile of the patient most affected by appendix diseases is male, white, and between 20-29 years old. In relation to deaths, the highest prevalence is between 70 and 79 years of age, also with a predominance of the male and white population.
