Abstract

Objective: To identify the scientific evidences of the association between serum uric acid (UA) and Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) values. Methods: An integrative review in the five-year period between 2015 and 2020, using original articles, in Portuguese and English, whose participants were aged between 18 and 60 years, indexed to Medical Literature Analysis and Retrievel System Online (MEDLINE), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences (LILACS) databases. Results: 14 articles were selected. All studies showed that high serum levels of UA were associated with the development of MetS. Recent studies have shown that high serum uric acid (UA) levels were associated with several markers of MetS. Final considerations: In all manuscripts, high serum UA levels correlated with higher Body Mass Index and waist circumference, higher risk of arterial hypertension, fasting hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia. Therefore, hyperuricemia can be considered a risk factor for the development of MetS.
