Abstract
Objective: To identify the benefits of radiosurgery and craniotomy in the treatment of brain tumors. Methods: This is an Integrative Literature Review conducted in the databases: U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health and Virtual Health Library. We used the Health Science Descriptors in English: radiosurgery, craniotomy and brain neoplasms, which were combined using the Boolean operator "AND". The study analyzed 24 articles published in the last five years (January 2017 to November 2022) and that answered the guiding question. Results: The United States and Japan stood out among the countries with the highest number of publications. Retrospective studies and literature reviews were the most prevalent types of studies. Radiosurgery and craniotomy were the two most used techniques in the treatment of brain tumors. Most of the researchers analyzed metastatic brain tumors and the radiosurgical intervention was the most studied, which presented more benefits. Craniotomy, on the other hand, showed less benefits than the previous technique. Final considerations: It is inferred that both radiosurgery and craniotomy are widely used techniques, which, when compared to each other, dispute the categorization of best surgical intervention in the treatment of brain tumors.
