Abstract

Objective: To assess the profile of chronic users and investigate the short, medium and long-term negative impacts on the health of chronic users of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Methods: Data collection was transversal, descriptive and observational, with a qualitative and quantitative approach. This is an exploratory and descriptive literature review, carried out in an organized, systematic and ethical manner, with existing data from PubMed and UpToDate databases. Results: The N collected was from 31 PPI users, 21 women and 10 men, with PPI use ranging from 67 days to 15 years. The results were presented through graphs, some corroborating pre-existing studies and others showing divergences with the medical literature. Conclusion: More studies should be performed in order to establish a causal relationship of the long-term effects of the use of proton pump inhibitors in the human body.
