Abstract
Objective: To describe the relationship between polypharmacy and chronic diseases in individuals over 64 years of age. Methods: To analyze individuals over 64 years old, through pre-existing forms in a higher education institution, 146 forms corresponding to the research objectives were chosen. Results: 480 medical records were reviewed, 146 of which fit the eligibility of the research, that is, elderly people over 64 years old, most of the sample being female (64.4%). This analysis was performed by extracting data from medical records between 2015 and 2020, since the Polyclinic did not remain open for consultations during the pandemic period. The mean age was 71.4 years with a standard deviation of 6.6. Of the 146 selected, 124 (84.9%) had chronic diseases, 76 (52%) were on polypharmacy, of which 68 (89.4%) were patients with chronic diseases, and among the 70 (48%) who were not on polypharmacy, 56 (80%) patients had chronic diseases. Conclusion: The relationship between the use of polypharmacy and chronic diseases is within the pattern found. The prevalence of women using polypharmacy was similar to findings in other selected studies. All those selected had high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, obesity and/or smoking as their main diseases.
