Abstract

Objective: The study evaluated the adherence to pharmacological treatment of children attended at a specialized child psychiatry outpatient clinic in the interior of Minas Gerais/Brazil. Methods: The descriptive/exploratory study had the sample defined by temporal convenience. Data were collected from October/2020 to March/2022. Semi-structured questionnaires to identify sociodemographic profile and assess psychiatric symptoms in caregivers were applied in the first consultation (pre-pharmacological treatment) and other instruments, to verify medication adherence, were applied 4 and 8 weeks after starting methylphenidate use, respecting the ethical aspects involved in research. Results: Of the 54 research participants, 55.6% were male, 71.4% were between 6 and 9 years old (most from Viçosa-MG), with a predominance of mothers as the main caregiver. The MAT method was applied to 33 patients after 4 weeks with 96.96% adherence and 23 patients after 8 weeks with 95.65% adherence. Conclusion: The sample size was limited, not allowing a significant statistical analysis. A broader study is suggested for a deeper evaluation of medication adherence to methylphenidate.
