Abstract
Objective: To report a case of a patient who presented with mucinous adenocarcinoma of vermiform appendix and discuss relevant aspects. Case Detail: A 46-year-old man comes to the consultation with a history of minor abdominal pain in the flank region and right iliac fossa. Computed tomography of the lower abdomen revealed an elongated cystic formation measuring 17.9x6.0x5.2 cm, with a volume of 290.0 cm3, extending from the ileocecal valve towards the midline in the pelvic region. Pathology revealed a large amount of mucus exiting the cecal appendix and concluded that it was a low grade mucinous neoplasm of the cecal appendix. Final considerations: Mucinous adenocarcinoma of the vermiform appendix is a rare neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract that corresponds to a small minority of findings in all appendectomies performed. The clinical picture compatible with acute appendicitis leads to the belief of an infectious process during the preoperative period, but most of the time, it is during the intraoperative period that an abnormality suggestive of neoplasia is detected.
