Abstract

Objective: To analyse the association between possible bruxism and violence among school adolescents. Methods: This is an exploratory cross-sectional study, with 234 adolescents of both genders, aged 14-19 years, regularly enrolled in high school in public schools. The questionnaire contained questions from the PeNSE instrument (sociodemographic data), YRBS (intrafamily violence, sexual, bullying and cyberbullying) and the RDC/TMD (sleep and wake bruxism). Data were statistically analysed using the chi-square and Fisher's exact test. Results: The prevalence of possible sleep bruxism was 19.9%, and of possible wakefulness bruxism was 22.1%. Adolescents who were victims of bullying, cyberbullying and those with sad thoughts had a higher frequency of possible sleep bruxism (p=0.004; p=0.005, p<0.001, respectively). For wakefulness bruxism, there was an association only with the thought of sadness (p=0.004). Conclusion: It is suggested that possible sleep bruxism in adolescents is associated with a history of bullying and cyberbullying episodes. The findings also advise that all health professionals, in contact with adolescents, take into account in their consultations and activities, the risks and vulnerabilities to experiences of violence to which they are subjected.
