Abstract
Objective: To analyze the benefits of using omega 3 in the clinical improvement and cognitive improvement of people with Alzheimer's. Methods: An Integrative Literature Review (ILR) was carried out, with the research's guiding question being formulated. Subsequently, the Descriptors in Health Sciences (DeCS), ´´supplementation``, ´´omega 3`` and ´´Alzheimer’s Disease`` were crossed in the following databases: SCIELO, PUBMED and LILACS, with the Boolean operator ´´AND``, using inclusion and exclusion criteria for selection of articles. Results: The studies showed evidence that corroborates the prerogative that omega 3 supplementation has beneficial effects on the cognitive function of people with mild or even mild to moderate cognitive impairment, especially when such supplementation is done in the early stages of cognitive decline . However, there are scientific works that report the need for longer studies, with a larger sample and standardization of the dose of Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) to participants. Final considerations: It is considered, therefore, that supplementation with omega 3 improves the cognitive function of patients with AD and even helps in the prevention of Alzheimer's. However, there is a need for longer studies with a larger sample and standardization of omega 3 supplementation.
