Abstract

Objective: To describe the socio-demographic, clinical, and surgical profile of patients with surgical site infection, considering postoperative glycemic levels. Methods: This is a descriptive, retrospective study developed from the consultation of medical records in the Health Care-Related Infection Control Service of a teaching hospital. Data were collected in the period from January 2017 to December 2017 using a previously structured instrument and analyzed using Excel 2010 spreadsheets. The Research Ethics Committee of our institution approved the research under CAAE number 89198218.1.0000.5013, with opinion number:  2.769.243. Results: Among the 46 surgical patients who developed the surgical site infection, 30 (65.21%) were not diabetic and had no glycemic alteration, whereas 16 (34.78%) patients had high glycemic levels or were carriers of diabetes mellitus. Conclusion: These results reinforce the importance of glycemic control in patients at extremes of age because of glycemic alterations caused by physiological stress or diabetes mellitus.
