Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical symptomatology process and proposed interventions during the hospitalization period of a patient with Influenza A and B, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Case detail: Infant, male, presented severe respiratory symptoms requiring orotracheal intubation and intensive care, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The etiological diagnosis was performed using a viral panel, using the RT-PCR technique, which included Influenza A and B viruses, SARS-CoV-2 and Respiratory Syncytial Virus. The therapeutic approach was instituted empirically, since the viral panel took a long time to obtain the final result. Concomitant infection with influenza A and B is linked to greater severity of the clinical condition, which can be explained by age group, low maturity of the immune system, lack of immunization and co-infection with 2 subtypes of influenza virus. However, clinical interventions were consistent with clinical protocols, favoring a better outcome. Final considerations: The present report presents a patient with coinfection by influenza A and B, at the height of the pandemic, predominantly by COVID-19, in which the disease evolved with severity. The correct management of SARS and early empirical treatment, including the use of Oseltamivir, influenced the subsequent clinical improvement and favorable outcome.
