Abstract

Objective: To identify and analyze people's beliefs related to handwashing behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Descriptive study with a quantitative and qualitative approach, was carried out from August to September 2020, in a municipality in the state of Paraíba. Results: The sample consisted of 28 participants, predominantly female, aged between 19 and 69 years. When collecting the subjects' beliefs, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior, three categories were listed from the results: Divergences regarding behavioral beliefs regarding hand washing; Relevance of social influencers for adherence to healthy behavior; Disparity in control beliefs regarding the provision of public places for hand washing: Facility or barrier?. Conclusion: Handwashing is an important form of individual and collective prevention against the spread of microorganisms, and is also relevant in the COVID-19 pandemic, with the beliefs of each subject, family and society contributing to this action. We emphasize the need for further studies on the issue of beliefs about hand washing.
