Abstract

Objective: To describe deaths from beriberi in Brazil from 1996 to 2020. Methods: Descriptive study of deaths from beriberi in the country, recorded in the Mortality Information System (SIM), from 1996 to 2020. Results: 352 deaths from beriberi were found in the SIM, with two records excluded due to lack of information on the municipality of residence. Deaths were registered in 25 federative units (Uf), with a predominance in São Paulo (72; 20.6%), Minas Gerais (54; 15.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (40; 11.4%). At least one death was registered in 241 (4.3%) municipalities, most frequently in São Paulo (20; 5.7%), Salvador (16; 4.5%), Belo Horizonte (13; 3.7%), Imperatriz (13; 3.7%), Rio de Janeiro (12; 3.4%) and Porto Alegre (12; 3.4%). Conclusion: Records show that beriberi occurs nationwide and should therefore be included as a notifiable disease, avoiding underreporting. There was an increase in the number of deaths between 2017 and 2020, due to the economic crisis and the growth of hunger and poverty, accentuated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
