Abstract

Objective: To evidence through literature the importance of the time interval between trauma and surgical intervention in transtrochanteric fracture in the elderly. Bibliographic review: The elderly population is the one that suffers most transtrochanteric fractures, mainly during ambulation. The absorption of impact during a fall increases according to the progression of bone fragility. Factors such as physical status, advanced age, comorbidities, mobility of the limb before the fracture and delay in the established treatment influence the mortality of this individual up to one year after the fracture. Final considerations: The extremely relevant factor when choosing surgical treatment is the time interval between the trauma and the intervention. Thus, from the present study it was possible to verify that the best time to approach the trauma is in the interval of 24 to 48 hours. However, for the surgeon to be able to perform the surgery in this time frame, the patient must be in good general condition. Another relevant question is age, because when it is high, it increases the risk of death. Therefore, individuals aged 85 years and older are evaluated as an independent marker, in order to identify the high risk of death.
