Abstract

Objective: To evaluate in the literature the efficiency of the therapeutic management of genicular nerve blocks for osteoarthritis in the elderly. Literature review: Osteoarthritis of the knee is characterized as a chronic disease described by the degeneration of articular cartilage, added to stiffness, pain, and limitation of movement, with functional impairment for the elderly. The treatment of knee osteoarthritis encompasses non-drug, drug, and sometimes surgical approaches. Examples include nutritional education, weight loss for obese people, and routine physical activity. Another alternative is the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and intra-articular injections of and surgical procedures such as total knee replacement or knee nerve (genicular nerves) block. As for genicular nerve block (GNB), it is a reasonable management alternative for the elderly when knee replacement and joint infiltration cannot be considered as an option. Final considerations: Although there are few studies addressing the advantages and indications of GNB, it is possible to point out some benefits by demonstrably reducing chronic pain, which allows for joint mobility in the elderly. Added to this, such a non-invasive solution represents a lower cost to the health system compared to non-conservative treatments.
