Abstract

Objective: To describe, through the literature, the potentialities and complications of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) as an HIV prevention strategy. Methods: This is an integrative review. The bibliographic search took place in the following databases: Virtual Health Library (VHL), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and Public Medline (PubMed). Descriptors were used for searches, using the AND and OR operators. Inclusion criteria were: publications from any period, available in full and free of charge, in Portuguese, English or Spanish. Results: Review composed of eight articles. The literature points out that prophylaxis is effective and safe, however, it is emphasized that there are numerous variables that must be considered, such as: access to medications, adequate adherence, target group, side effects, etc. Several barriers to better dissemination and implementation of PrEP were identified, such as: difficult access, lack of professional knowledge, lack of information, short and long-term side effects, lack of clinical studies carried out with other target groups, and stigmas and prejudices. Final considerations: The difficulties and challenges highlighted by this review can and must be overcome in order to ensure greater dissemination and adoption of PrEP.
