Abstract

Objective: To evaluate, through a literature review, the etiology that leads to pigmentation of composite resin restorations and mention clinical alternatives to prevent this unwanted aspect. Bibliographic Review: Aesthetics plays a key role in dentistry, with aesthetic restorative materials developed to reproduce the best optical characteristics of dental tissues. Therefore, even if vital, darkened teeth can greatly impair the aesthetics of the smile. Therefore, it is necessary for professionals to guide their patients on extrinsic pigment agents and on the mechanisms that interfere and intensify the appearance of aesthetic restorative materials, aiming at preserving their stability and longevity of the restoration. On the other hand, extrinsic causes are related to the absorption of dyes resulting from exogenous sources from food and some beverages. Final considerations: Composite resins are the most used materials in direct and indirect restorations and, based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that pigmentation results from intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The clinical approach taken by the dental surgeon can help to prevent or reduce these stains through an adequate technique for making the restorations.
