Abstract

Objective: Investigate the effectiveness and importance of public health policies in combating obesity, contrasting with the existing barriers to their implementation. Methods: This is an integrative literature review composed of articles published in the last 10 years in Portuguese, English or Spanish and with the content available in full. As a guiding problem for the research, the following were used: What are the obstacles that hinder the implementation of public health policies aimed at combating obesity? The bibliographical research was carried out in December 2022, with searches carried out in the databases: MedLine, Spanish Bibliographic Index in Health Sciences (Ibecs), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS) and Acervo+ Index Base. The Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) were used: “Obesity Management”, “Obesity” and “National Health Policies” with the boolean operator “AND”. Results: 13 articles that fit the inclusion criteria report that public policies act as essential tools in reducing obesity, despite the existence of barriers in several aspects.  Final considerations: Despite the difficulties found in the literature, public policies are effective in combating obesity. They must be well delimited, applied and adapted to different realities. Therefore, favorable means for the respective implementations must be sought.
