Abstract
Objective: To describe bioactive compounds present in three species of Plinia sp. and investigate its health benefits. Methods: Literature review study with search in Pubmed/Medline and ScienceDirect from the descriptors ('jabuticaba' OR 'jaboticaba' OR 'Plinia sp.' OR ') AND ('composition' OR 'characterization') AND ('benefits' health') with no time limit. Inclusion criteria were articles published in Portuguese, Spanish and English that evaluated any part of the fruit of three species of Plinia sp. (P. cauliflora, P. trunciflora and P. jaboticaba). Results: The fruit is rich in total phenolic compounds with a large amount of anthocyanins in the peel. The antioxidant capacity of the three species was demonstrated by different methods and the biological activity was reported in 20 studies. In addition, beneficial effects on lipid and glucose metabolism, anti-obesity and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as beneficiais effects on the brain and heart systems, have been demonstrated. In addition, they show action against pathogenic bacteria and improve the microbiome, without showing toxicity. Final considerations: Plinia sp. has the potential to be used by the pharmaceutical industry due to its bioactive characteristics due to the presence of functional compounds, or in the food industry due to its high levels of anthocyanins.
