Abstract

Objective: Verify if there was a change between the type and level of injury with a functionality for activities of daily living and in Quality of Life (QoL) in the first months of the injury. Methods: This study was carried out with individuals hospitalized at Hospital de Apoio de Brasília. The Individuals were divided into groups according to the neurological level of the lesion, and according to the type of complete or incomplete injury, obtained from the ASIA classification applied by physiatrists at the admission of patients and obtained from medical records. Functional assessment was assessed using the Brazilian version of Spinal Cord Independence Measure (SCIM III) and QOL was assessed using the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-bref). Results: It was observed that there was no significant relation between functionality and quality of life, but there was greater functionality in the paraplegia group. In relation to the WHOQOL-bref, only the psychological domain showed alterations, verifying a higher QoL in incomplete injuries and in quadriplegics. There were negative correlations between function and QOL in the facets of work, sex life and habitation. Conclusion: That individuals in the first months of injury have a limited self-perception regarding their new condition and health status.
