Abstract

Objectives: To analyze the presence of risk factors associated with the development of bone fragility in type 2 diabetic patients. Methods: A cross-sectional, observational and analytical-descriptive study was carried out, based on the application of a questionnaire and analysis of medical records of diabetic patients, from june to august of 2022, with convenience sample. Results: A sample of 80 patients was used, being 72,5% female, aged between 51-70 years (58,8%), diagnosed with diabetes for more than 10 years (52,5%) and with glycated hemoglobin levels below 8,5% (77,5%). Among those surveyed, it was identified as an additional risk for the development of bone fragility: use of antidiabetic medications that have an effect on bone metabolism and/or that increase the risk of hypoglycemia (66,3%), history of smoking (48,8 %), chronic use of corticosteroids (16,3%) and previous fragility fracture (8,8%). Only 42,5% had a bone densitometry record in their medical records and, of these, the majority (67,6%) had diagnosis of osteoporosis. In this population, a total of 46,3% had an average fracture risk calculated by FRAX®. Conclusion: Bone fragility should be considered a complication of diabetes, and the design of prevention and screening strategies of this condition is essential.
