Abstract

Objective: To identify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on indigenous populations in the Amazon. Methods: This is a retrospective/descriptive, epidemiological and quantitative study, using secondary data from the Fundação de Vigilância em Saúde do Amazonas to create graphs and tables that illustrate the results found. Results: By December 2022, 21,415 cases of COVID-19 were reported among indigenous people in the state of Amazonas, with males aged over 40 years and females aged 10 to 39 years being more affected. The most described symptoms were cough and fever, and there were 335 deaths, with a 1.6% fatality rate. Conclusion: The state of Amazonas, with the largest indigenous population in the Brazilian territory, presented a high rate of infection by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, hospitalization and death, related to the geographic, logistical and access difficulties to health resources in this population, which is considered vulnerable. We hope that this study can contribute to a better understanding of the needs of this population and balance existing differences in health when compared to other non-indigenous populations.
