Abstract

Objective: To describe maternal deaths and the epidemiological profile of maternal mortality in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, between 2010 and 2020. Methodology: This is a retrospective descriptive quantitative study. The studied population consisted of women who died during the pregnancy-puerperal period, assisted in Ouro Preto, MG, from 2010 to 2020. Secondary data from the city's Information System was used, considering the variables: sociodemographic, obstetric characteristics, of prenatal care and description of death. Results: Between 2010 and 2020, 63.5 female deaths from maternal causes were recorded per 100,000 live births. Most maternal deaths occurred in adult women (100%), married or in a stable relationship (50%), non-white (66.7%) and with incomplete secondary education (50%). In the obstetric scope, there was a predominance of multiparous women (66.7%), who underwent prenatal care (83.3%), with supplementation of ferrous sulfate (33.3%) and folic acid (50%) and with intercurrences in the pregnancy (50%). The main causes of death were pulmonary embolism (33.3%), hypovolemic shock (33.3%) and septicemia (33.3%). Conclusion: The municipal maternal mortality profile shows social vulnerability and preventable causes-of-death.
