Abstract

Objective: To assess the nutritional status and prevalence of pressure ulcers in patients with spinal cord injury. Methods: This is a cross-sectional and prospective observational study, with patients who had some spinal cord trauma and were admitted to the Rehabilitation and Prolonged Care Unit (URCP) at a public hospital in Brasília from May to September 2022. The tool used for nutritional screening was the Spinal Nutrition Screening Tool (SNST), specific for spinal cord injured patients. Results: Most patients were male representing 88% of the sample, the major cause of spinal cord trauma was falls with 36%, 84% became paraplegic and 16% quadriplegic. As for nutritional status, 68% had low risk of malnutrition, 20% medium risk and 12% high risk. LPP was absent in 36% of these patients, 64% had some degree of injury, of patients who had LPP 32% were eutrophic, 16% overweight and 16% obese. Conclusion: The importance of using specific equipment to carry out nutritional assessment in this public was highlighted in order to assist in the treatment of PIs and in rehabilitation for a better diagnosis and recovery of nutritional status.
