Abstract
Objective: To investigate the association between the experience of domestic violence and sociodemographic, clinical, psychological and behavioral factors. Methods: This is a cross-sectional cohort study, carried out with 230 students, of both sexes, aged 10 to 19 years, in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. A form containing variables and a scale was used to assess the Common Mental Disorder (CMD). Data were processed using the Stata version 12 program. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: The sample had a female majority (57.8%), attending the 6th and 7th grade of elementary school (53.5%). From this, the multivariate analysis identified a significant association between the experience of intrafamily violence with the use of alcohol and CMD. Conclusion: The study revealed that adolescents who have experienced domestic violence are more likely to use alcohol and have CMD compared to those who have not experienced the problem.
