Abstract

Objective: To identify in the literature the incidence of maxillary bone fractures during the trans- and postoperative period, describing their prevalence, new treatments and forms of prevention. Bibliographic review: Excessive force when using forceps, bone absence that affects the oral sinus communication, root shape of the upper element, are some of the reasons that can cause damage to the anatomy of the maxilla. At the same time, maxillary bone fractures resulting from extractions can affect the sociocommunicative and functional relationship of affected individuals, such as facial paresthesias and dysgeusia. Therefore, we demystify issues about bone trauma of surgical origin, with the aim of a literary contribution and new treatments and scientific approaches. Final considerations: Anatomically, the maxillary premolars and molars have an intimate relationship with the maxillary sinus, and because of this, it becomes the most common oral region for fractures to occur. Above all, caution, diagnosis and treatment can help to mitigate the possible complications arising from surgical incidents and avoid untreated complications such as the formation of the buccal-sinusal process.
