Abstract
Objective: To analyze records of hospitalizations for respiratory diseases (RD) in the elderly population between 2010 and 2020 by region in Brazil. Methods: Data from the Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS) provided by the DATASUS on types of RD, sex, color/race, type of service and type of establishment were used. related to the hospitalization of the elderly. Descriptive analysis, using frequency and inferential analysis using the Chi-square test were performed to present the data (IBM SPSS Statistics, version 23.0). Results: There were 4,472,052 hospitalizations for RD in the elderly. The Southeast and South regions accounted for 64.4% of the total. In the Northeast region (52.5%), the female gender prevailed, unlike the others. The item “race/color” was more prevalent in the North (55.7%) and Northeast (47.2%) and white in the Southeast (49.9%) and South (72.3%). The Southeast (33.3%) and South (43.7%) regions recorded more hospitalizations in the private regime, while the others in public establishments. According to the nature of the care, urgent hospitalizations predominated. Conclusion: The results reinforce the importance of planning and managing health services aimed at meeting the complex causal mechanisms of RD, especially in populations in situations of greater health vulnerability, such as the elderly.
