Abstract

Objective: To know how patient safety is developed in an emergency care unit. Methods: It is characterized by a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory research, developed in an Emergency Care Unit in a municipality in the southern region of Brazil. The sample comprised 13 members of the multidisciplinary team. Data collection consists of non-participant observation and two focus group meetings. Data analysis was performed using Bardin's Content Analysis. Results: The findings were used as theoretical devices for the organization of two focus group meetings with members of the multidisciplinary team. From this, three categories emerged: the multidisciplinary team's knowledge about patient safety; evidencing multidisciplinary practices on hand hygiene; and incidents that occurred in the preparation of medicines. Conclusion: Faced with the weaknesses found, it is up to health institutions to permanently educate the team of professionals about the importance of adopting good practices in their daily work, thus contributing to the success of patient safety.
