Abstract

Objective: To analyze the use of combined therapy of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 -SGLT2) and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 -DPP4) in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Methods: This is an integrative literature review, using databases of digital collections of scientific research and applying inclusion and exclusion criteria to select the most relevant materials. Results: The combined therapy of SGLT2 and DPP4 inhibitors proved to be effective in different settings compared to monotherapy. There was better glycemic control, weight loss, low rate of genital infections and lower risk of hypoglycemia. The exposed effects strengthen the use of a combination therapy. The mechanisms of these drugs complement the baseline treatment with metformin. It is still necessary to expand research and evaluations for the prescription of this combination for individuals with kidney and heart diseases. Final considerations: Combination treatment with a DPP4 and SGLT2 inhibitor may be an effective and safe option for T2DM patients initiating pharmacological therapy or for patients who received treatment in a single-medication format of metformin but require additional glycemic control due to the characteristic of disease progression.
