Abstract
Objective: Identify the factors that influence suicidal ideation in first-year undergraduate medical students. Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study, in which a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Maslach Burnout Inventory for Students and Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire were used. A total of 161 academics participated in the study, from both private and public higher education institutions. Results: This study showed that there was no significant association between occupational stress and suicidal ideation. On the other hand, a significant association was observed between the beginning of the academic experience (p=0.0013) and being a scholarship student (p=0.0001) with suicidal ideation. Regarding psychosocial factors, a significant association was observed between the relationship with parents (p=0.0008), thoughts of dropping out of the course (p=0.0008), perception of insufficient performance (p=0.0201) workload extensive (p=0.0181) and lack of motivation (p=0.007) with suicidal ideation. Conclusion: It is suggested that, to minimize the impact of routine changes and adaptations in the life of the medical student, be implemented in universities psychological shifts, in addition to debates on the topic and guidance.
